About us

Osaka International School (OIS) has been serving the educational needs of the international community of the Kansai region of Japan since 1991.

In our relatively short history we have developed, along with our sister school, Senri International School (SIS), opportunities for a magnificent school experience. Included in this are our renowned music program that has sent students to some of the finest music schools around the world, a competitive sports program that regularly includes travel to international competitions around Asia, and an academic program that consistently develops well rounded and well informed students who are prepared to be global citizens.

Developing informed, caring, creative individuals contributing to a global community

Our mission

Our mission is to develop “informed, caring, and creative individuals who contribute to a global community.” As evidence of our accountability to this challenging statement OIS is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), a regional agency of the United States Department of State. We are also members of the Council of International Schools (CIS), the Japan Council of International Schools (JCIS), and the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS). Our educational programs are also evaluated and authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization. As an IBO World School, OIS offers three International Baccalaureate programs: the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme, thus creating a truly international kindergarten to college entrance educational experience.

Our unique shared campus

Our relationship with our sister school, SIS, is the one feature of life at OIS of which we are most proud and that sets us apart in the possibilities we have to offer. SIS is a private Japanese middle and high school that shares the same campus as OIS.

While our curriculums are different, OIS is an English language university preparatory program, SIS is a Japanese language Japanese university preparatory program, the PE, art, music classes and selected language options are shared by students from both schools. The concert bands, orchestras and choirs, the sports teams, and student government are also drawn from students from both schools. This means OIS is able to enjoy the benefits of a small school combined with the benefits of a big school. We also share educational dialogue with our colleagues in our sister school; our Two Schools Together forum of teachers from both schools is currently exploring how to expand the Diploma Programme to include more SIS students.

Our student learning outcomes

It is the goal of Osaka International School to prepare students for their future in a global community; to graduate lifelong learners who are ethical, competent, culturally aware and self-reliant. We expect our graduates to possess sufficient skills to enrich their lives and the lives of others. It is our expectation that OIS students will be prepared for their future in the global community by possessing the following attributes:

  • Creative - Strive for excellence in imaginative, creative and artistic endeavors.
  • Thinkers - Make connections between ideas, disciplines, cultures, and modes of expression to solve complex problems and make reasoned ethical decisions.
  • Inquirers - Approach new situations with curiosity, and acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research, demonstrating independence in learning.


  • Caring - Demonstrate empathy, compassion, and respect towards the needs and feelings of others, and develop a personal commitment to action and service.
  • Open-minded - Understand and appreciate one’s own culture and personal history, and remain open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities.
  • Principled - Commit to the wellbeing of oneself and the immediate and global communities whilst demonstrating honesty, integrity and responsibility for one’s actions and the consequences that accompany them.


  • Balanced - Practice habits of good and balanced intellectual, emotional and physical health.
  • Reflective - Give thoughtful consideration to one’s own learning and experience to be able to assess and understand one’s own strengths and limitations.  
  • Communicators - Understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively through a variety of modes of communication.
  • Risk takers - Approach unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with courage and forethought and have the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas and strategies.
